“We were hoping to get free Jaguars. We got fifty free tins of baked beans.” ~ PETE TOWNSHEND, 2020
Initially released in December 1967 and described latterly by Rolling Stone as ‘The Who’s finest album’ The Who Sell Out reflected a remarkable year in popular culture. As well as being forever immortalised as the moment when the counterculture and the ‘Love Generation’ became a global phenomenon and ‘pop’ began metamorphosing into ‘rock’.
The new Super Deluxe Edition of The Who Sell Out features 112 tracks, 47 of which are unreleased, an 80-page, hard-back full-colour book, including rare period photos, memorabilia, track by track annotation and new sleeve notes by Pete Townshend with comments from the likes of Pete Drummond (Radio London DJ), Richard Evans (designer) and Roy Flynn (the Speakeasy Club manager).
The Super Deluxe package also includes nine posters and inserts, including replicas of the 20” x 30” original Adrian George album poster, a gig poster from The City Hall, Newcastle, an eight-page programme from The Who’s October ’67 show at the Saville Theatre, a business card for the Bag o’ Nails club, Kingly Street, a Who fan club photo of the group, a flyer for Bath Pavilion concerts including The Who, a crack-back bumper sticker for Wonderful Radio London, Keith Moon’s Speakeasy Club membership card and a 1968 Who Fan Club newsletter.
As a taster for the set, an EP of Pete Townshend’s previously unreleased demos has today been released on all streaming services including ‘Pictures Of Lily’ (new remix, previously unreleased), ‘Kids! Do You Want Kids?’ (aka ‘Do You Want Kids, Kids?’) (previously unreleased), and ‘Odorono’ (previously unreleased).
The Who Sell Out was originally planned by Pete Townshend and the band’s managers, Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, as a loose concept album including jingles and commercials linking the songs stylised as a pirate radio broadcast. This concept was born out of necessity as their label and management wanted a new album and Townshend felt that he didn’t have enough songs.
The ground-breaking original plan for The Who Sell Out was to sell advertising space on the album but instead the band opted for writing their own jingles, paying tribute to pirate radio stations and to parody an increasingly consumerist society.
The homage to Pop art is evident in both the advertising jingles and the iconic sleeve design created by David King, then art director at the Sunday Times, and Roger Law who later created the Spitting Image TV show. The sleeve features four advertising images, taken by renowned photographer David Montgomery of each band member: Odorono deodorant (Pete Townshend), Medac spot cream (Keith Moon), Charles Atlas (John Entwistle) and Roger Daltrey, Heinz Baked Beans. The story goes that Roger Daltrey caught pneumonia from sitting in the bath of cold beans for too long.
The Who Sell Out is a bold depiction of the period in which it was made, the tail-end of the ‘swinging 60s’ meets Pop art mixed with psychedelia and straight-ahead pop. It’s a glorious blend of classic powerful Who instrumentation, melodic harmonies, satirical lyrical imagery crystallised for what was only the group’s third album. The album’s ambition and scope is unrivalled by The Who, or any other act from that period.
Within the bold concept, were a batch of fabulous and diverse songs. ‘I Can See for Miles’, a top ten hit at the time, is a Who classic. ‘Rael’, a Townshend ‘mini-opera’ with musical motifs that reappeared in Tommy and the psychedelic blast of ‘Armenia City In The Sky’ and ‘Relax’ are among the very best material anyone wrote during the 1960s.
One of the most extraordinary albums of any era, The Who Sell Out is The Who’s last ‘pop’ album. Two years later came Tommy – a double concept album about a deaf, dumb and blind kid.

The Who Sell Out captured a magical time when top 40 AM radio was the thing and every kid had a transistor radio, playing glorious songs that rolled out every week. That was one of the most creative times in music, art and culture.
Send me informations about this THE WHO’s Album. Thanks
WOW!!!! LOOKING FORWARD to getting this box set!!!! I have all the rest of the box sets. As I always say THE WHO are the greatest rock band in the world
one copy ov the coulerd vinyl pls
2LP MONO VINYL EDITION D2C EXCLUSIVE pls
This is great news, indeed! I’ve waited many years for that long version of Magic Bus! Can’t wait to get this.
The Who are definitely the greatest rock and roll band in the world. From their number one fan, I can;’t wait for this box set to be released. My bedroom is already an homage to The Who. I have many pictures of Pete and a poster of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’. Also I have many books on The Who. I simply adore Pete Townshend and Keith’s drumming, Roger twirling his microphone and John playing bass.
Are any more coloured vinyl sets going to be released?
The coloured vinyl mono D2C edition was a limited edition and so it’s unlikely there will be any more.
Welcome to the camp…
They are my heroes, too !
I am so glad that this doesn’t have any discs that are just concerts from that era that seem to be part of so many re issues these days. The whole project looks wonderful.
The HD digital version (https://www.prostudiomasters.com/?ct=t(newsletter-20210423-us)&mc_cid=4db562c5ff&mc_eid=d33e6a6dd5#quickview/album/87606) seems to be missing the following material. Is that intentional?
From disk 1:
25 Sunn Amps promo spots 2:42
26 Great Shakes ad 1:07
From disk 2:
16 Someone’s Coming 2:33
18 Glittering Girl 3:05
22 Sodding About 2:51
From disk 3:

Hi There
Just bought the 5CD 2Single version , got it today , absolutely brilliant.
Someone mentioned getting 6 digital bonus tracks via Amazon Auto Rip program . Are these on my set or are they extra ones ,if so what are they ??
Thank you
Ron
The Townsend demos disc is next level amazing. Would buy the stand alone LP in a heartbeat if this is ever released. Disc 5 has been on repeat for a week straight.
Love the colored vinyl edition I bought, but it’s a shame the bonus stereo & mono LP’s have different tracks on them.. Now I guess I’ll have to get the stereo version. Oh well, much love, fellas!
Amazing amazing amazing… though the nitpicker in me feels compelled to point out that the “Mirasound” version of Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand on this release is actually the US single B-side version. The true Mirasound version can be found on the 2009 Deluxe Edition.
I bought in a big store in France this SUPER DELUXE EDITION. I discovered after opening it that the fan club photo was crumpled. I saw that this product in Czech Republic and the promblem comes from a control failing over there. It s a pity for SUPER DELUXE product.I’ve no recourse except if you will be able to send me another copy of this picture by mail. Please let me know about that.Thank you very much. Best regards.
Hi Max, you need to return the Super Deluxe Edition to the record store in France where you made your purchase and they should replace the box set for you.
