Pete Townshend – Tour Diary

From Pete Townshend’s Tour Diary – November 21st 2012

I have been spreading rumours that Rachel and I would be premiering our orchestral version of Quadrophenia at the Royal Albert Hall Teenage Cancer concert in March 2013. Now we have decided that because the Who tour extends into March and probably beyond into April in the UK that it would be too much for me personally. Rachel’s score sounds wonderful, and will certainly be premiered some time in 2013 or 2014. More on this later.

Meanwhile The Who are now in Canada. Montreal was great. Ottawa tonight. Looking forward to it.

I hope the tour is as much fun as it looks. And I really hope you bring the tour to Ireland next year. Loving the book by the way.

    All the best,

    Mark Quinn.

Please come to Texas before you leave the US!

Great pity you can’t combine the two. The current Quadrophenia tour is great but I also loved hearing Roger doing Quadrophenia selections in 1994 backed by a full orchestra.

  7. Sameer says:

Pete, take your time! This sounds like it’d be a great project – looking forward to hearing what you and Rachel end up putting together!

Anything involving Rachel Fuller gets my thumbs up. Talk about a nice person, only met her once while yelling for her to sit in with the who in Boston. No I was not drunk, I love Rachel as a singer among other things, relax pete :<) I'm not some nut w/ a crush. Bottom line I think rachel's addition to Quad would be great. Plus the Attic is a groundbreaking show, which stopped for wht reason??? You have been gracious enough to tour with Quad for us. I saw boston, had to give up my tickets for montreal due to a Dr. appointment-I have an ulcer-, but gifted them to my friend from Ninja Custodian, another Burlington band as talented as Phish w/ the the only drummer I know who can play almost as well as KM. But I digress, Please Pete do the rachel quad, but give notice so us Yanks can fly over w/out having to pay millions on last minute airfair. Hope you are having fun, but in Boston I never have seen you so happy, NEVER, although I'm only in my 40's.

    Hello Pete,

It was great having you back in Montreal last night and watching you have as much fun as you seemed to be having up on stage with Roger and the rest of the band.

You guys really did Quadrophenia justice and gave a wonderful show.

    All the best!

    Alain Bolduc

Pete, great to hear you are planning on touring Blighty with the Quadrophonium in 2013

  12. Cherylann says:

Pete, glad you are doing well. Please tell Rachel I miss her XXOO!

  13. Brad Blake says:

Hello Pete! First I’ve heard of an orchestral version of my favorite piece of rock music (Quad in entirety). I’ve always thought of it as your version of Mahler’s 2nd or Ludwig’s 9th or some such awesome piece of work, and I can’t wait to hear what Rachel and you create 🙂 Sadly missing this East Coast tour, but all set for San Jose (okay Oakland) and The Joint in Vegas. And most of all, I’m happy that you are getting a kick out of playing and touring! Cheers from the Left Coast and Bay Area.

Thank you so much for coming to Ottawa!
Just got home from a fantastic show and yes … we are having a cup of tea 🙂

    The show was truly amazing.
Wishing you all the best for the rest of the tour and beyond.

    Mark & Morgan in Ottawa.

Pete, though I would listen to any rendition of Quadrophenia of any kind, I would say don’t spend YOUR energy on a play version. Orchestral would be fine where someone else is actually doing the groundwork. I think you could do some wonders going the technological way, as in experimental/electronic renditions of any of your material. I’m saying that something YOU would do well given all the tools. It would be fun for us long time listeners to have a new slant on the classics… and just may gain some fresh interest from the kids out there.

Just a Thought from the chair,

    Les

Great news for the UK into 2014 🙂

    Happy Thanksgiving

  17. John Perry says:

Thankyou for coming to Ottawa and playing my favorite album. Your generosity in undertaking the tremendous physical and emotional personal effort to produce such a dauntingly complex show pays tribute to the honest humility you expressed so well when you said at the end of the show last night that you “came to play these songs, not for us, but because they belong to you now”.

Special thanks to Roger for kicking your scrawny ass all over Kingdom Come to tour and celebrate the seminal acheivement that your Quadrophenia project is.

Loved the video tributes to John and Keith.

I am very happy you are able to share this experience with Simon, a great gig to share this with a brother.

Congratulations to Zakk on ably filling very big shoes. Tell Pino to crank it up and take over the song more confidently when its his time to shine and showcase the extrordinary bass lines from this music.

Best of luck in balance of the tour and I’m chipping in some dough into the teen cancer fund.

  18. Robert Spooner says:

Thanks Pete, I caught both the Montreal and Ottawa shows with my son (the next Generation of Who fan). You guys sounded and looked fantastic. Thank you for all the music and memories, The Who is the best…. On a side note, your book is a GREAT read, I loved it.

  19. Susan and Glen Pettinger says:

Thanks so much for putting Ottawa on your tour. We are still blown away by the energy and jaw dropping performance! This was a show that will not fade from memory for years to come. We always loved your music but what we experienced last night was so much more. By the way, are you willing to divulge your secret to staying so young? You look marvelous!

  20. mike peereboom says:

Thanks for letting me relive my youth with my 2 sons accompanying me. I had the honour of seeing Keith play his last show at Maple Leaf Gardens Oct 31 1976 and have been waiting since then to hear Quadrophenia played in it`s entirety, A class act from start to finish. I was emotionally drained and my sons shared the sentiment.God bless you all!

  21. Patrick says:

Are you coming to the Pacific NW? Portland or Seattle?

  22. dave says:

i saw The Who live for the first time in 1982 at The cottonbowl in Dalls. to say that a young college kid that grew up in rural Wyoming was overwhelmed with the show is an under statement. i was mesmerized. i now get to take my two teenage children to see The Who live in Denver on Feb 12th. i can’t wait. Rock on Pete and know your biggest fan is in the audience fulfilling a dream. Introducing his children to the music of The Who live. Thanks for touring again.
