Maximum R&B Live

UK: Universal DVD 820 742 7. Re-released: 2003
US: MCA 088 111 066-9. Re-released: 2001

An excellent companion to The Kids Are Alright and The Who’s box set, Thirty Years of Maximum R&B, this DVD presents two and a half hours of genuine live performances by the Who arranged chronologically and punctuated by 1994 interviews with Pete, Roger and John in which they talk about The Who’s career, with particular emphasis on the development of their stage performances.

Among the many highlights are two numbers from the Isle Of Wight set in 1970 (YOUNG MAN BLUES and I DON’T EVEN KNOW MYSELF), and four from The Who’s massive open air gig at Charlton Football Ground in 1974 (SUBSTITUTE, DROWNED BELL BOY and MY GENERATION)

The first 90 minutes feature The Who with Keith Moon (seen on his best form during a snappy HAPPY JACK from the London Coliseum in 1969); thereafter it’s Kenney Jones on drums and, at the conclusion, The Who plus the touring ensemble that gathered for their 1989 25th anniversary tour.

Also included in the package are excellent liner notes by John Atkins, including precise details about the origins of the clips.
