San Diego, CA: The Who prove that the show must – and can – go on.
When Zak Starkey was taken ill (nothing serious) yesterday hours before The Who’s show at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend invited Scott Devours, who had toured ‘Tommy’ with Roger’s solo band two years ago, to step in.
Scott was magnificent. He played the whole of Quadrophenia note perfectly with only a two hour runthrough to the delight of everyone – onstage and off. Scott performed the ‘greatest hits’ encore with no rehearsal at all.
At the end of the show, Pete Townshend gave him a warm and well deserved tribute.
“Quadrophenia’s not an easy piece,” says Roger Daltrey. “To do what Scotty did took real guts.”

Having seen the LA show last week and not heard the news about Starkey, it was a surprise to see someone else sit down behind the kit opening night in Vegas. Devours did terrific work considering he was asked to play a 90 minute masterpiece. Simon is handling many of the leads, it would be interesting to hear Pete talk about this. Pete managed to stab his hand on his guitar’s whammy bar and Roger got wonderfully pissed off at someone who lit up near the stage, Who could ask for more?
The first Vegas Show has ROCK!!!

Saw the tour in San Diego. Best show they have done in years! It was a true delight. Pete and Roger were at their finest and Scott thanks for stepping in, you were a great replacement.
I was at the Glendale show, it was my 3rd show on this tour alone (Atlanta, Greenville) 21 shows overall and as always they were on fire. But just like in sports when you get hurt and your sub comes in and performs better then you getting your job back may not be automatic. Zak had better get back soon because Scott was brillant, and I like Zak.
Devours was great given the circumstances, but Zak is probably the best drummer in Rock and Roll at the moment and his style is perfectly suited to the Who. His job is safe.
